Website Audit & Recommendations

Clear the leaks.
Restore the funnel.
Grow.

Three specialist audits of southernedgestump.com, covering conversion (CRO), search (SEO), and AI search visibility (AEO). The brand and page design are a real asset. Underneath them, a handful of technical defects are blocking most of the leads the site should produce, and every one of them is fixable.

Site southernedgestump.com Audited September 2, 2026 Scope CRO Β· SEO Β· AEO Market Middle Tennessee, 10 cities
Executive Summary

A good-looking site that can't take a phone call

The site presents well: strong dark visual identity, a clear section flow, real differentiators (veteran-owned, insured, industrial Rayco grinder), and a server-rendered homepage. But the audits found that every tap-to-call link dials a disconnected 555 placeholder number, the footer shows a fabricated address, every page except the homepage is invisible to search engines and AI crawlers, and there is no analytics of any kind. AI assistants already quote this site when asked about it by name; today they hand out the wrong phone number.

Conversion
D / leaking

Right structure, broken plumbing. Dead call links, no homepage quote form, phone hidden on mobile, zero tracking.

Search
D / one page

Only the homepage exists as real HTML. No keywords in the title, no schema, no sitemap, no city or service pages.

AI Search
F / misquoted

Absent from every non-brand AI answer we tested. On the brand query, AI cites a conflicting address and phone number.

Fix Today β€” Under One Hour Total

Four defects are actively costing jobs

  1. Every phone link dials a dead number. All three homepage call links, plus the contact page's "Call Emergency Line" button, are coded tel:6155558733 β€” a 555 placeholder β€” while the visible text reads (615) 212-9662. Every mobile visitor who taps "call" reaches nothing. Fix: replace with tel:+16152129662 in all five places, then test-tap on a real phone. Likely the highest-ROI five minutes available.
  2. The footer address is fake. "123 Oak Street, Nashville, TN 37203" is template placeholder data. Homeowners vetting a contractor read it as a scam signal, and it poisons local-search trust. The business's real public record (Hendersonville Chamber, Nextdoor) says 100 McKain Crossing, Hendersonville, TN. Fix: replace with the real address, or for a home-based operation: "Based in Hendersonville, TN β€” serving all of Middle Tennessee."
  3. Footer phone and email aren't tappable. Both are plain text spans, not tel: / mailto: links. The Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter icons all link to # β€” dead ends for anyone checking the company mid-vetting. Fix: link the phone and email; point social icons at real profiles or remove them.
  4. Two phone numbers compete for the business's identity. The site displays (615) 212-9662; the Chamber and Nextdoor listings publish (859) 982-7702. AI search already merges the two records β€” an assistant asked about "Southern Edge Stump" today quotes the site's copy but gives out the (859) number and the Hendersonville address. Fix: pick one canonical name, address, and phone, then make the site, Chamber listing, and Nextdoor page say the identical thing.
Pillar One

Conversion: catch the leads you already get

The page flow is right β€” problem, services, gallery, process, proof, CTA. The losses come from friction and missing infrastructure between the visitor and the phone call.

Phone is invisible on mobile

High impactLow effort

The header phone number is CSS-hidden below 768px (display:none until desktop widths), and the stylesheet contains no fixed-position element β€” no sticky call bar exists. After a mobile visitor scrolls past the hero, there is no call button until the bottom of the page, where the number isn't tappable.

Fix Show a phone icon button in the mobile header, and add a fixed bottom bar on mobile with two actions: "Call Now" and "Free Quote." Stump grinding is a phone-first trade; this is where the audience converts.

Mockup β€” Mobile with sticky call bar

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… Rated Β· Veteran Owned Β· Same-Day Available

Two changes: the amber phone button lives in the mobile header at every scroll depth, and the fixed bottom bar keeps both conversion paths one thumb-tap away. The bar only renders on mobile widths and hides when the on-page form is in view.

No quote form on the homepage

High impactMedium effort

Every "Get a Free Quote" button routes to /contact β€” a page that renders as a blank white screen until a 516 KB JavaScript bundle loads, with the tab briefly titled "Southern Edge Stump Removal Website" (an internal dev name). The form itself requires name, email, phone, and a free-text message, with no location field.

Fix Embed a three-field form on the homepage β€” Name, Phone, City/Zip β€” headlined "Get Your Free Quote β€” We Reply Same Day." Make email and message optional. Add the industry-standard shortcut: "Text a photo of your stump to (615) 212-9662 for a quote in minutes."

Mockup β€” Homepage quick-quote form

Get a Free Quote
Faster: text a photo of your stump to (615) 212-9662

Three fields, nothing else. No required email, no blank "message" box to stall on. The photo-text line captures the people who won't fill out any form β€” and a stump photo is most of what's needed to price the job anyway. Placed in the hero on desktop, directly under it on mobile.

Zero analytics or conversion tracking

High impactLow effort

The only script on the site is the platform's own floot.com/t.js. No GA4, no call tracking, no form-submit event, and no thank-you page (success is a toast on the same URL), so there is no way to count leads or attribute them to a channel.

Fix Install GA4, fire a lead event on form submit, add click listeners on phone links, and redirect submissions to a /thank-you page ("We'll call within one business hour β€” or call us now"). This must exist before spending a dollar on ads or Local Services.

The hero doesn't say what, where, or why you

Medium impactLow effort

The headline is all vibe, no information β€” a visitor scanning for five seconds doesn't see "stump grinding," a place, or the strongest differentiator. "Veteran Owned" first appears mid-page in a checklist.

Note The current tagline can live on as the brand line elsewhere on the page β€” the H1 slot has a sales job to do.

Reviews carry no proof

Medium impactLow effort

Five testimonials show first names only, with no platform, no dates, no aggregate count, and no link to verify. One review (Ricky D.) is about boxwood and yew planting β€” not stump work β€” which muddies what the company does.

Fix Attribute each review ("β€” David R., Google review"), show the aggregate ("4.9 from N reviews"), link to the profile, and swap the planting review for a stump or storm job. If tree removal and planting are real services, list them β€” that's a keyword expansion, not a problem.

Same words, real weight. The platform mark, the aggregate count, a city, a date, and a link a skeptic can click. Review count and rating shown here are illustrative β€” display whatever the live Google profile says, never more.

No pricing anchor, no FAQ, buried urgency

Medium impactMedium effort

The page promises "Free, Transparent Estimates" and "Competitive Pricing" but shows no numbers. Standard objections go unanswered: grind depth, what happens to the grindings, lawn and utility protection, whether the owner needs to be home. "Same-day service" appears once, inside process step 02. The Emergency card claims 24/7 while the contact page lists Sunday as closed.

Fix Publish a real price range by stump diameter (the owner's numbers, not invented ones), add a six-question FAQ, move "Same-day service available" into the hero, and reconcile the hours copy: "Office hours Mon–Sat; 24/7 emergency line."

Mockup β€” Pricing anchor + FAQ

Standard grinds go 4–6 inches below grade β€” deep enough for grass and sod. Planting a tree or pouring concrete? We'll grind deeper on request.
What happens to the grindings? +

A range beats silence. Price uncertainty is why homeowners collect three quotes and go quiet. A diameter table qualifies leads before the call, and each FAQ answer β€” marked up with FAQPage schema β€” is a sentence AI engines can quote with the company's name attached.

2.7 MB of images, and the wrong ones preloaded

Medium impactLow effort

The hero background is a 901 KB JPEG that is not preloaded, while roughly 1.7 MB of below-the-fold images (including a 337 KB logo PNG) are β€” so the first thing a visitor waits for competes with assets they can't see yet. No WebP, no responsive sizes.

Fix Compress the hero to under 200 KB WebP and preload it, drop the below-fold preloads, shrink the logo to under 30 KB, and add width/height attributes to stop layout shift.

Pillar Two

Search: right now, Google can see one page

The domain has exactly one indexable document. The competitive field is soft β€” the Nashville stump-grinding results are directories and small operators with no serious SEO β€” so a correctly built site can compete within months. The near-term local-pack wins are Hendersonville, Gallatin, and Mt. Juliet (proximity), with Nashville as an organic-page play.

Every route except the homepage is an empty shell

High impactMedium effort

/contact, /privacy, /terms, and any unknown URL return a 462-byte document: no text, no meta description, and the title "Southern Edge Stump Removal Website." Unknown URLs also return HTTP 200, so mistyped links index as duplicate empty pages. The conversion page is invisible to search.

Fix Enable prerendering for every route (the homepage proves the pipeline works), give each page its own title and description, and return real 404s for unknown paths. Verify with curl that each route's raw HTML contains its content.

One-page architecture can't rank for 16 queries

High impactHigh effort

Navigation uses anchor links (/#services, /#process). The ten service cities exist only as a bullet-separated line of text. One 604-word page is competing for ten city queries plus six service queries; the competitors ranking today run multi-page sites.

Fix Build dedicated pages: six service pages seeded from the existing card blurbs, then ten city pages (e.g. /stump-grinding-murfreesboro-tn) with 200–400 words of real local copy each β€” neighborhoods, job photos, city-specific reviews. Never ten clones with a swapped city name.

Mockup β€” City page template

One template, ten real pages. Every block after the H1 changes per city β€” neighborhoods, photos, the review. That's what separates a page that ranks from a doorway page Google ignores. Build Hendersonville, Gallatin, and Mt. Juliet first, where proximity already favors the local pack.

The title tag omits every money keyword

High impactTrivial

Current title: "Southern Edge Stump Co. | Middle Tennessee." The words "stump grinding" appear nowhere in the title or H1 β€” the strongest on-page signals both sit empty for the exact queries customers type.

Fix Title: "Stump Grinding & Removal in Nashville & Middle TN | Southern Edge Stump Co." Meta description: add the phone number, "free quote," and two cities, targeting ~150 characters.

Mockup β€” The Google result, before and after

Same page, different query match. The rewritten title finally contains the words customers type, and the description works as a mini-ad: what, where, proof, phone. This is also the text AI Overviews reads first.

No schema, no sitemap, duplicate hostnames

High impactLow effort

Zero structured data on the domain. robots.txt and sitemap.xml both return raw S3 "AccessDenied" errors. Both www and non-www serve identical content with no canonical tag and no redirect β€” Google has already indexed the www variant. No Open Graph tags, no favicon.

Fix Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD (ready-to-paste block in the AI Search section below), publish robots.txt with a sitemap line, publish sitemap.xml, 301-redirect www to the apex, and add a self-referencing canonical, OG tags, and a favicon.

Claim and build the Google Business Profile

High impactMedium effort

No GBP link, map, or Google review widget appears anywhere, and searches surface no strong profile. The local three-pack β€” where competitors like Otto's win β€” runs on GBP category, reviews, and proximity, not website copy.

Fix Claim GBP as a service-area business based in Hendersonville with the ten cities as service area and "stump grinding service" as primary category (not generic tree service). Use the canonical phone and URL, ask every completed job for a review, and route the five existing happy customers to post theirs on Google.

Veteran-owned is an unused ranking asset

Medium impactMedium effort

"Veteran Owned & Operated" appears once as a checklist bullet and a badge image. There is no About page, no owner name, no story β€” and veteran status unlocks citation sources competitors can't touch.

Fix Build /about with the owner's name, photo, service branch, the Rayco grinder, and Hendersonville roots. List the business in the VA's Veteran-Owned Small Business directory and veteran business directories, and flesh out the Chamber profile they already hold.

Pillar Three

AI search: become the source engines quote

We tested what ChatGPT-style engines and AI Overviews actually surface today. The machinery already works β€” on the brand query, AI quotes this site's service copy word for word. The problem is there's nothing quotable about price, process, or place, and the entity data contradicts itself.

Query testedWho wins the AI answer todaySouthern Edge

Publish the answers AI engines are looking for

High impactMedium effort

The site has no FAQ, no cost content, and no comparison content. Total extractable text: about 600 words, none of it phrased as a question or an answer. National aggregators own every cost query because no Tennessee operator has published local numbers.

Fix Three pieces, all prerendered: (1) a Tennessee cost guide with a real price table by stump diameter and a "Prices updated September 2026" date line; (2) a "stump grinding vs. stump removal" page opening with a definitional sentence an engine can lift ("Stump grinding shreds the stump 4–6 inches below grade and leaves the roots to decay; stump removal extracts the entire root ball"); (3) a homepage FAQ with question-form headings β€” cost, grind depth, grindings haul-away, regrowth, 811 utility marking β€” wrapped in FAQPage schema.

Replace vague claims with citable specs

Medium impactLow effort

AI engines quote specifics and skip adjectives. Uncitable lines on the page today: "We bring the heavy machinery so you don't have to," "Industrial-Grade Equipment," "Competitive Pricing," "we grind stumps down below grade" (no number). A competitor earned its AI citation with a single spec: "6–8 inches below grade."

Fix One fact per claim: grinder make, model, and cutting width ("fits through a 36-inch gate"), standard grind depth in inches, insurance coverage amount, typical time per stump, founding year, stumps ground to date.

Give machines the business facts in structured form

High impactLow effort

No JSON-LD exists anywhere on the domain, so the machine-readable version of this business is an empty set. Ready to paste into the homepage head once the canonical address and phone are confirmed:

Note Skip self-marked review/star schema β€” Google penalizes self-serving review markup on a local business. Let the Google profile carry the stars.

Get on the platforms AI answers are built from

Medium impactMedium effort

"Best near me" AI answers are assembled from review platforms β€” the Murfreesboro/Franklin test answer was built entirely from Thumbtack review counts. Southern Edge has a Nextdoor page and a Chamber listing, but no findable presence on Google, Yelp, Thumbtack, or Angi. Two near-name competitors ("Southern Stump," "Southern Stump Removal") add misattribution risk while the entity is weak.

Fix In order of leverage: Google Business Profile, Yelp (free), Thumbtack, Angi β€” each with the identical canonical name, address, and phone. Then add robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and an llms.txt summary file so crawlers can discover the new pages.

The Plan

Roadmap: ninety days to a working funnel

1

Stop the bleeding

This week Β· under a day of work
  • Fix all five dead phone links β€” tel:+16152129662, then test-tap on a phone
  • Replace the fake address and settle the (615) vs (859) question everywhere at once
  • Link footer phone/email; fix or remove dead social icons
  • Rewrite the title tag and meta description with "stump grinding" and geography
  • Standardize CTA copy on "Get a Free Quote"; retire "Get Started"
  • Add favicon, canonical tag, and lang attribute
2

Build the machine

Weeks 2–4
  • Claim Google Business Profile β€” category "stump grinding service," ten-city service area, review pipeline started
  • Prerender every route β€” real HTML for /contact and all future pages; true 404s; www β†’ apex redirect
  • Add LocalBusiness schema, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, OG tags
  • Homepage quote form + thank-you page + GA4 lead tracking
  • Mobile call bar and header phone button
  • Hero rewrite β€” veteran-owned, same-day, and review count in the first screen
  • Compress images β€” hero under 200 KB WebP and preloaded; below-fold preloads removed
3

Own the answers

Months 2–3
  • Six service pages seeded from the existing service cards
  • Ten city pages β€” start with Hendersonville, Gallatin, Mt. Juliet where proximity favors the local pack
  • Tennessee cost guide + "grinding vs. removal" page + FAQ with schema β€” real numbers from the owner
  • About page β€” owner's name, service branch, equipment, story; veteran directory listings
  • Yelp, Thumbtack, and Angi profiles with the canonical NAP; attribute on-site reviews to their platform
  • llms.txt β€” a plain summary of who, where, what, and prices for AI crawlers

Sequence matters: phase 1 makes the phone ring for the traffic that already arrives, phase 2 makes every future dollar measurable and every page visible, and phase 3 builds the content that wins search and AI citations. Skipping ahead to content while the phone links are dead would grow traffic into a leaking bucket.
